“Eating mindlessly over the sink. I learned that what I was doing had a name.”
Sometimes the smallest things have the greatest impact. For top-ranking hubbuber Lady_Triker, AKA Ruth, this meant stumbling upon a discussion on mindless eating in a hubbub-coached challenge. “You start munching on a quick snack, zone out, and next thing you know, the entire box of crackers is gone.”
A revelation of sorts—Ruth has since become a hungry consumer for the food and health information circulating the hubbub platform. “Some of the comments from the coaches have really made me stop and think,” Ruth says. “I’ve picked up new ways to cook things, new ideas for recipes. I’ve become more aware of what’s good and what’s not.”
Awareness is one thing, but change is another. So how is this hubbubing, trike-riding, #4-ranking-in-the-nourish-category champion doing it? Check out our Q&A with hubbub’s highest-level player.
Q. Ruth, what’s changed for you since starting hubbub?
A. I’m healthier. I’m drinking water, which before was only a necessary evil to get vitamins down. And I’m eating things I never would have touched before, like steel cut oats and chia seeds–I’ve been an oatmeal-hater all my life. I’m not into juicing yet, but I’ve stopped drinking those zero-calorie drinks. And, I’ve replaced eating out of habit, that hand-to-mouth motion, with taking sips of water instead.
Q. You rank #1 for both the balance and rewind challenge categories, how’d you manage that?
A. I always look for new challenges, and I especially love the 1-day “flash” challenges and routine 7-day challenges that my hubbub friends create, but my staples are the more passive ones like book reading, sharing photos and building puzzles. They’re relaxing, so I do a lot of them. I also try to do anything that will earn me a badge. Everyone loves getting badges.
Q. Is there a challenge category you wish you spent more time with?
A. I think I have a fairly good mix of challenges going. I work out at Curves 3-4 times a week and incorporate move challenges into my circuit. I have actually had other ladies in the class do some of the challenges with me. I do lunges, calf-raises, planks–even squats, which I don’t particularly like. Burpees are about the only thing I won’t do, but I’ve at least given them a try.
Q. If you had to sum up hubbub in one word, what would it be?
A. Awesome. I love everything about it. I love the site–it’s funky and fun. I love the people and the friendships. There’s so much camaraderie and everybody gives kudos. There are so many positive influences, and the coaches are great at sharing knowledgeable, easy-to-read tidbits. I started hubbub mainly because of the Amazon gift cards, but now I can’t wait to log on and see what other people are doing and saying. It’s just so fun—sometimes you laugh so hard, you cry.
Q. We have to ask: how long have you been cruising around on a trike?
A. For about the past two years now. My husband couldn't get me on a motorcycle, but a trike I could do. We take a lot of weekend rides. I’m up to 10,000 miles!
Way to rule the road, Lady_Triker, and 10K fist-bumps for all the hard work and healthy changes you’re making. Keep on triken'!
